Turn over a yoghurt pot, a ready-meal tray or a bag of salad and you will almost always find a small triangle of arrows, often with a number tucked inside. Most of us read that mark as a quiet reassurance: this can be recycled, so into the recycling it goes. The truth is more awkward. That symbol was never designed to tell you what your council will accept, and on a great deal of food packaging it says very little about where the item will actually end up.

Reading the pack properly is not about becoming a waste expert. It is about telling apart a handful of marks and phrases that look almost the same but mean very different things, so that your sorting does some good rather than quietly making matters worse.

The triangle is two different marks doing one job badly

There are really two symbols that get muddled together. The first is the chasing-arrows loop, sometimes called the Mobius loop: three arrows folded into a triangle, chasing one another. On its own it is a general recycling symbol with no legal force in most places. Anyone can print it on anything, and no test or certification sits behind it. The second is the resin identification code: the same triangle, but with a number inside it. That number is not a grade or a score. It is simply a label telling sorting facilities which type of plastic the item is made from.

The confusion is understandable, because the two look almost identical. But the resin code was created for the people running recycling plants, not for shoppers. A number inside a triangle identifies the plastic; it does not promise that the plastic is collected, wanted, or recycled where you live. Treat the bare loop as decoration until something else on the pack tells you otherwise, and treat the numbered triangle as a clue to the material rather than a verdict on its fate.

What the numbers actually stand for

The codes run from 1 to 7, and each points to a different family of plastic with very different prospects once you have finished with the food inside.

  • 1 (PET or PETE): clear drinks bottles, some fruit punnets and salad boxes. Widely collected at the kerbside as bottles, because clear PET has a genuine onward market and is easy for machines to spot. The same plastic as a tray or a film is a patchier story, since coloured and thin PET is worth less and harder to sort.
  • 2 (HDPE): milk bottles, juice bottles, some rigid tubs and the caps on other bottles. One of the more reliably recycled plastics in bottle form, and a good example of a material that behaves well when it is rigid and poorly when it is a flimsy film.
  • 3 (PVC): the occasional cling film, blister pack and rigid tray. Rarely accepted in household collections, and a nuisance if it slips in, because it can spoil batches of other plastics.
  • 4 (LDPE): carrier bags, bread bags, the flexible film lid over a tray. Hard to recycle at home; where it is taken at all, it usually needs the supermarket front-of-store bins rather than the kerbside bin.
  • 5 (PP): margarine tubs, yoghurt pots, microwave-safe trays and many bottle lids. Increasingly collected, but still varies from one council to the next, so this is the code most worth checking against your own local list.
  • 6 (PS): polystyrene, foam meat and mushroom trays, some pots and lids. Very seldom recycled through household schemes, whether it is the rigid clear form or the expanded foam.
  • 7 (Other): a catch-all for everything else, including mixed and bio-based plastics and many multi-layer materials. Effectively a shrug, and usually not recyclable through normal routes.

The pattern worth remembering is that rigid bottles at the lower numbers tend to have a genuine onward market, while films, foams and mixed materials mostly do not, whatever the triangle seems to imply. If you only ever remember one thing, remember that a bottle is a better bet than a bag, a tub is a better bet than a tray, and a single clean material is a better bet than a laminate.

A symbol is not the same as a system

Even when a plastic is technically recyclable, three things decide whether it truly gets recycled, and none of them are printed on the pack. The first is collection: your local authority has to accept that specific format, and the rules differ from one area to the next, which is why the same pot is recycling in one town and rubbish in the next. The second is sorting: very small items, black plastic and multi-layer packaging often slip through the machinery or confuse it. The third is contamination: a tray still greasy with food, or a paper sleeve fused to a plastic window, can drag an otherwise good item into the reject pile.

Black plastic is the classic technical trap. Many sorting plants identify plastics by shining near-infrared light at them and reading what bounces back, and the carbon pigment that makes a ready-meal tray glossy black absorbs that light rather than reflecting it. The machine simply cannot see the tray as plastic at all, so a perfectly recyclable material is waved through to landfill or incineration because it is the wrong colour. Multi-layer packaging causes trouble for a different reason: a crisp packet or a stand-up pouch may bond plastic, foil and paper so tightly that no plant can separate them cleanly, which is why these bright, glossy wrappers are among the least recyclable things in a food shop.

This is why wishcycling, hopefully tossing doubtful items into the recycling because it feels better, tends to backfire. It can lower the quality of the whole batch and send more of it to waste, and in the worst case a contaminated load is rejected entirely. The symbol invites optimism; the system runs on specifics.

The pot itself is often PP (code 5) and may well be accepted, but the peel-off lid is usually a thin foil or a foil-plastic laminate that belongs elsewhere or in the general bin. The right move is to separate the two: rinse the pot, put it out if your council takes rigid pots, and deal with the lid on its own rather than leaving it stuck on, where it can confuse a sorter or contaminate the pot.

The ready-meal tray with film

Here you often have a rigid tray, a clear plastic film sealed over the top, and sometimes a cardboard sleeve. If the tray is black, it may not be detected at sorting whatever its code says; if it is a pale colour, it stands a better chance. The film is a flexible plastic that kerbside schemes rarely want, and the sleeve is card that recycles well only once it is clean and separated. Three parts, three different answers, and none of them obvious from the single triangle stamped on the base.

The bag of salad

Salad and other soft food films are flexible plastic, frequently labelled with a higher code or with words rather than a number. These are the classic front-of-store items: hard to process at the kerbside, sometimes taken back at larger supermarkets, and otherwise general waste. A leftover smear of dressing makes them worse still, so an empty, dry bag is the only version worth trying to recycle at all.

Why the wording matters as much as the mark

Packaging carries words as well as symbols, and the words are where much of the gentle misleading happens. Terms like “eco”, “green” and “natural” have no fixed meaning and no test behind them. More slippery still are claims that sound precise but are not, and regulators have begun to draw lines around them. The US Federal Trade Commission’s guidance for marketers, the Green Guides, sets out that an environmental claim such as recyclable or compostable has to be something the maker can actually substantiate rather than simply assert. In other words, the burden sits with the brand to back the claim, not with the shopper to disprove it.

“Biodegradable” is the classic trap. The same guidance treats an unqualified “biodegradable” claim as deceptive when the item is realistically headed for landfill, because buried rubbish will not meaningfully break down within a year. The word describes a hoped-for outcome under conditions the packaging will almost never meet.

“Compostable” carries its own catch. Many compostable items only break down in an industrial composter running hot and turning the material for weeks, not in a garden heap or an ordinary kerbside bin. If you have no food and garden waste collection that will take them, or your council does not accept compostable packaging in it, the label may lead nowhere useful and the item ends up as landfill anyway. A compostable fork in the recycling bin is also a contaminant, because it is neither a recyclable plastic nor destined for the right stream. The practical reading is to look for a named standard or a specific instruction, and to be wary of any green-sounding word that comes without one.

Why this is worth the bother

It is tempting to conclude that packaging symbols are hopeless and to give up on them altogether. That is the wrong lesson. Packaging is not a fringe issue: in the United States, containers and packaging are the single largest category of municipal waste, about 28 percent of everything generated, and the picture across most wealthy countries is broadly similar. What we buy, and how well we sort it, genuinely shifts that figure. Reading the pack accurately is one of the few points in the chain where an ordinary shopper has real leverage over the outcome, not through guilt, but through better sorting and slightly better buying.

Reading a pack with a clearer eye

None of this requires memorising a table in the supermarket. A few habits do most of the work.

  • Trust your council’s list over the pack. Look up your local authority’s accepted-materials guide once, and let that be the arbiter rather than the triangle. If a pack carries an instructional label that says something like “check locally”, that is exactly what it is asking you to do.
  • Read the number, not just the arrows. Bottles and rigid tubs at 1, 2 and often 5 are your safest bets; treat 3, 6 and 7 as probable rubbish unless you are told otherwise.
  • Separate mixed materials. Peel the film lid off the tray, the sleeve off the pot, the plastic window out of the box, so each part can be judged on its own.
  • Empty and give it a rinse. A quick rinse keeps food residue from spoiling a batch. It does not need to be spotless, just not full of yoghurt or dressing.
  • Be sceptical of vague virtue. “Biodegradable” and “eco” with no detail deserve doubt; look instead for specific, checkable instructions or a named composting standard.
  • When genuinely unsure, leave it out. A doubtful item in the general bin is often better than a hopeful one that contaminates good recycling.

The symbol on the bottom of a pack is the start of a question, not the answer to it. Once you can tell the general loop from the resin code, a rigid bottle from a laminated pouch, and a substantiated claim from a hopeful one, the packaging aisle becomes a good deal easier to read honestly.
